What Causes Hyperpigmentation?

There are multiple factors that can trigger the onset of hyperpigmentation, including:

Genetics:

Genetics and hereditary factors play a significant role in the development of hyperpigmentation. Certain gene variants may make individuals more susceptible to skin pigmentation, and can influence the age at which it begins and the extent of its severity.

Hormonal imbalances:

Changes in hormonal levels can impact melanin production and result in hyperpigmentation. Hormone changes during pregnancy and general hormonal imbalances like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also trigger hyperpigmentation.

UV radiation:

Prolonged exposure to the sun or artificial sources of UV light accelerates the production of melanin in the skin, leading to excessive melanin deposits under the skin which create darker patches.

Skin inflammation:

Various factors can lead to skin inflammation, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, and injuries. In response to inflammation, the skin produces an increased amount of melanin as part of the healing process, which can cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

Natural ageing process:

As the skin ages, the number and activity of melanocytes decrease, resulting in a reduction in overall melanin production. These melanocytes can become larger and more irregular in shape, causing an uneven distribution of pigment.

Our Approach & Process: How it Works

At Este Medical, we understand that treating skin pigmentation and melasma can be difficult. We believe the best way to achieve optimal results is by prepping the skin before applying the Cosmelan Peel.

This peel is specifically designed to target and reduce pigmentation, but it’s also important to ensure that your skin is in its best condition for maximum effectiveness.

1Prep & Treatment

Arrow

The Cosmelan Peel is a powerful treatment that works in two stages; however, your skin must be cleansed and prepped before this. First, the peel is applied to your skin and left for several hours until completely dry. There is no discomfort, but ensuring you have no social plans during this period is advised. After this, the peel will be removed with water, and you can expect your skin to be a little irritated and red due to the active ingredients which have penetrated your skin during this time.

2The Healing Process

Arrow

One day after the treatment, your skin will be red and plump. This is a sign that the Cosmelan Peel has stimulated the process of skin shedding and wound healing. During this time, the body sends blood to the area, flooding it with collagen, and red and white blood cells, which helps reduce pigmentation and improves overall skin tone.Seven days after the treatment, recovery is complete, and results can already be seen. Pigmentation will have faded, and your skin’s overall texture will be improved due to increased collagen production and skin hydration. You must use Cosmelan 2 serum to prevent the formulation of new hyperpigmentation.

3Monthly Aftercare

Arrow

Two months after the treatment, you can expect long-term changes in your skin's pigmentation, texture, tone and luminosity. It’s important to maintain a strict skincare routine to achieve optimal results, including using an SPF50 sunscreen and Cosmelan 2 serum daily. The Cosmelan treatment is an effective solution for treating pigmentation, but it’s important to understand that results vary depending on how severe the pigmentation was before treatment. In some cases, a maintenance program of 6-monthly treatments may be required. During the months after your treatment, your dedicated Este Medical Group consultant or therapist will be available to contact if you have any concerns and will be regularly checking in with your progress.

If you’d like to learn more about our professional Cosmelan Peel, please get in touch with Este Medical Group, and we’ll be happy to provide further information and advice. We understand that no two cases are the same, so we will work with you to develop a tailored treatment plan for your needs.

Cosmelan Peel

A cosmelan peel will reduce liver spots or sunspots, and in many cases eliminate dark, discoloured areas of skin. A series of depigmentation peels is one of the best courses of action for long-lasting results.

Cosmelan has a solid reputation of being one of the most successful ways to effectively treat skin pigmentation; the peel’s active ingredients help skin cells to slow down the overproduction of melanin. If you want to achieve a brighter, more even skin tone, then this pigmentation treatment is highy recommended.

Laser resurfacing treatment

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Using the technology of thermal energy, a laser resurfacing treatment can help to diminish areas of discolouration due to hyperpigmentation. Laser treatment for depigmentation can target age spots as well as small to big patches of hyperpigmented skin.

Through laser treatment, the skin’s surface is stimulated to renew, which improves skin tone and texture. Laser skin resurfacing can also help to reduce pore size, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and improve the appearance of acne scars. If you suffer from resistant patches of pigmentation that have been unchanged by other treatment options, then you should strongly consider laser skin resurfacing.

Pigmentation Treatments Bristol

The Best Skin Pigmentation Treatment in Bristol

Do you suffer with skin pigmentation in Bristol and are looking for a treatment to remove dark spots from your skin? Este Medical Group offer advanced pigmentation treatments in Bristol for all causes of hyperpigmentation. We offer safe and effective skin lightening treatment such as the Cosmelan peel and laser treatment.

Hyperpigmentation is a prevalent skin condition characterised by an increased production of melanin, which is the pigment responsible for our skin, hair, and eye colour. This excess melanin production leads to the appearance of darkened or discoloured patches on the skin's surface. These spots can vary in size and shape and are often caused by an imbalance in melanin levels in the body.

By thoroughly understand the causes and factors that contribute to hyperpigmentation, our skin care professionals here at Este Medical are able to offer a range of advanced pigmentation treatments in Bristol that target discolouration and aim to restore a balanced complexion.

What is the Difference Between Melasma and Hyperpigmentation?

Melasma and hyperpigmentation are both skin conditions that cause dark patches on the skin. The main difference between them is their causes and affected areas. Melasma typically occurs due to hormonal changes, often affecting pregnant women or those taking hormone-based medications. It mostly appears on the face, particularly the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip.

Hyperpigmentation can occur due to various factors, such as sun exposure, inflammation, or injury to the skin. While it can affect any part of the body, it often appears on areas frequently exposed to the sun, like the face and arms. Both conditions are generally harmless but can affect one's appearance and may require a different skin pigmentation treatment in Bristol.

Your Pigmentation & Melasma Guide

You can take proactive steps at home to prevent or reduce the worsening of skin pigmentation.

  • Always use sunscreen! Wear a powder, lotion or cream with SPF 30+ or higher to protect against UVA and UVB damage on a daily basis
  • Avoid excessive skin exfoliation, as it may cause irritation and trigger inflammation leading to further pigmentation
  • Gently remove all makeup before bed to prevent acne breakouts and skin inflammation
  • Incorporate products with ingredients like Vitamin C, niacinamide (a form of vitamin B₃), and liquorice extract into your skincare routine, as they may help brighten and improve the appearance of pigmentation
  • Stay well hydrated and maintain a healthy food diet for optimal skin health

We invite you to contact our Este skincare professionals about treatment options to target your pigmentation concerns.
