Maskne is when the skin around your mouth, nose, and chin becomes inflamed with acne, or irritated, red and blotchy skin. It is most common in people who suffer from oily or blemish-prone skin and regularly wear a mask or face covering for a long period of time.
Maskne is quite a new problem and has come about as a result of wearing face masks or face coverings for an extended period of time. Maskne occurs because the face covering creates a warm, moist environment where skin is constantly in contact, and rubbing against, the fabric of the face covering being worn. This constant friction between skin and face covering is the reason why some people experience acne breakouts in this area, or red, blotchy, sore, and irritated skin.
Fortunately, maskne isn’t serious and can usually be cleared up without too much of a problem. If possible, and when you’re in a place where you feel safe to do so, take off your mask or face covering and let your skin breathe. Making sure you regularly wash your face covering is also another must if you are keen to keep your maskne to a minimum. Use skincare products that are non-comedogenic – this means they won’t block your pores. Moisturise, cleanse, and try a retinoid product to help boost skin cell turnover. If you’re experiencing persistent maskne and are finding the cycle hard to break, we offer treatments at Este to help tackle the root problem. They include -

I’m anxious about not wearing a mask but I hate my maskne, what tips do you recommend?
If you’re used to wearing a mask and don’t want to take it off when out and about, then the best thing to do is make sure you have fresh, clean supplies of face masks or coverings. Reusable masks are the most environmentally friendly and can simply be popped in the washing machine. When you’re at home, give your skin as much mask-free time as possible in order to let your skin breathe. You should also try to drink plenty of water to flush your body of toxins, and cleanse your skin morning and night.
What is the best type of mask to wear if I’m prone to maskne?
The best type of face mask if you suffer from maskne is a silk one. Silk is soft and gentle on the skin, causes less friction and irritation and also helps the skin breathe.
Are there any at-home maskne treatments?
There are various options you can try when it comes to treating maskne at home. First off, it’s best to avoid wearing makeup in the area that’s affected. It’s recommended that you take a probiotic (oral or topical) as it’s thought they help with the battle against acne. Avoid highly processed foods, dairy, and fried foods as they could trigger your acne to flare up. Try tea tree oil or aloe vera to help soothe and cleanse your skin naturally.
